The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has constituted a high-powered investigative team to probe the deaths of some suspected illegal miners arrested during enforcement operations in Niger State.
The suspects were arrested during coordinated operations conducted by the Niger State Command in the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis on September 15 and 16, 2026, as part of efforts to tackle illegal mining and protect the country’s natural resources.
Following the deaths, NSCDC Commandant General, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, directed the immediate establishment of an investigative team led by the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation.
According to the Corps, the team will investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including the condition of the suspects when they were arrested, their period in custody, detention conditions, medical attention provided and other relevant factors.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, for medical examination and to determine the actual cause of death.
The NSCDC said it is also working with relevant health authorities and sister security agencies to ensure that appropriate medical and public-health measures are implemented.
The Corps cautioned against attributing the deaths to any specific disease before medical and laboratory examinations are completed.
It said the health and welfare of all persons currently in custody have been prioritised, while measures are being taken to protect personnel who may have come into contact with the affected persons.
The NSCDC expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured them that the circumstances surrounding the incident would be thoroughly investigated and addressed based on established facts.
The Corps reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal mining and protecting Nigeria’s critical national assets, while stressing that it remains committed to upholding the dignity, safety and fundamental rights of persons in its custody.
The public was also urged to remain calm and allow the investigative and medical processes to take their course, with further updates expected as verified information becomes available.
