Northern Elders express apprehensions on integrity of the judiciary

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed concerns regarding the current functioning of Nigeria’s legal system. The forum has articulated apprehensions about the way in which the legal framework in the country is operating as it pertains to the efficacy and fairness of the legal processes and procedures in Nigeria.

The NEF is apprehensive about the functionality of the legal system and has highlighted the need for a thorough examination and potential reforms to address these concerns.

They are concerned that people might start to doubt if the courts are fair and trustworthy.

Professor Ango Abdullahi, who leads the Forum, talked about how important it is for the courts to be careful in what they do so that people can trust them.

Professor Ango Abdullahi mentioned that a retired judge, Dattijo Mohammed, had also raised worries about corruption and problems in the legal system.

The NEF said that the courts play a big role in making sure the rules are followed, democracy is protected, and people get fair treatment.

The NEF said that it’s really important for the courts to be fair, especially when dealing with elections.

They want all judges to be honest and not take sides. They think that having a fair legal system is crucial for keeping democracy strong.

The NEF pointed out that if the legal system is not strong, politicians might start doing anything to win elections, even if it’s not right.

They said this could lead to corruption, where people in power misuse their authority and don’t follow democratic rules.

The NEF stressed how important it is to have a strong and honest legal system. They asked people to pay attention to what the courts are doing and report if they see anything wrong.

They want to make sure the legal system is fair and follows the rules to keep everyone in Nigeria safe and treated fairly.

After the legal decisions in Kano, Zamfara, and Plateau, the elderly members of the community expressed their thoughts.

Subsequently, these pronouncements sparked demonstrations in various areas of Jos and Kano States.

The judgments appear to have had a significant impact on the sentiments and reactions of the local population, leading to public displays of discontent in the mentioned regions.
