The Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) has pledged to resolve complaints regarding missing mail and stated that one of its objectives for this year is to bring in N10 billion for the government.
This was said on Monday by Ms. Tola Odeyemi, the Postmaster General of NIPOST, who announced an ambitious vision for the future of postal services in Nigeria. She emphasized the need for improved service delivery and alignment with national objectives.
Even with yearly budget commitments, the Service has historically produced little to no revenue for the government; however, should the N10 billion objective be reached, it will be NIPOST’s greatest earning year to date.
NIPOST received an N18.4 billion allocation from the government for recurring expenditures, according to the 2024 budget.
Missing Mails
In response to worries about lost mail, which is among the reasons why a lot of Nigerians are hesitant to use NIPOST, Odeyemi stated that the organization intends to modernize its technological infrastructure. One of the changes would be the addition of an end-to-end tracking system, which will lower human error and increase public confidence.
“Yes, we are aware of the complaints of missing mail. We plan to enhance our technology with an end-to-end tracking solution. This allows us to see where things go wrong because this is a human system, and errors are inevitable. But we will correct the problems with better technologies,” she stated.
She underlined the current administration’s dedication to turning NIPOST into an organization that improves the lives of common Nigerians and adds value to government operations.
It is imperative, as Odeyemi emphasized, that NIPOST’s daily operations be in line with the organization’s overarching vision and mission as set forth by the current leadership.
“We aim to investigate opportunities for efficiency and re-energize the NIPOST base throughout all 774 local government areas. It has become vital for us to provide the basic level of service that is required of NIPOST,” she remarked.Â
One of the major steps to propel NIPOST’s expansion, according to the Postmaster General, is the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).
She states that the partnership’s goal is to lower the cost of transport products and services through NIPOST by 15% for the 22 million firms that are registered with SMEDAN. This is anticipated to have a positive impact on the economy and increase productivity in some industries.
What to note
One of the departments that makes up the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy is NIPOST.
The Communications Minister, Dr. Bosun Tijani, requested suggestions from Nigerians last year regarding how the company may be repositioned. It seemed that Tijani was unhappy with the state of Service at the time and its lack of commitment to fulfilling expected duties in the digital economy.
Some of the recommendations state that the ideal NIPOST would function as the open backbone infrastructure for licensed courier businesses to power logistics for trade and commerce throughout the nation, much like the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) in the logistics sector.
To improve online purchasing experiences, it was also proposed that NIPOST should actively assist and integrate with e-commerce platforms.
This entails safe payment channels, effective last-mile delivery, and returns management.
