As of December 31, 2023, 104.16 million Nigerians have successfully received their National Identification Numbers (NIN), marking a significant uptick in enrollment.Â
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) reported a substantial increase from 94.03 million NINs issued by the end of 2022, with 10.13 million new enrollments recorded in 2023 alone.
In a bid to accelerate NIN issuance and bolster digital identity systems, the World Bank has set an ambitious target of 148 million registrations by June 2024, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive national identification.
New Director-General Aims for Expedited Issuance
The recent appointment of Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote as the Director-General aims to expedite the process of issuing digital identity tokens, emphasizing the commitment to streamline the NIN issuance procedure.
Lagos emerged as the leading state in enrolments, boasting 11.42 million NIN registrations, followed closely by Kano with 9.19 million. Additionally, states such as Kaduna, Ogun, Oyo, Katsina, FCT, Rivers, Delta, and Bauchi have showcased significant enrollment figures, reflecting diverse participation across regions.
While several states demonstrated commendable participation, others lagged in NIN registrations. States including Kwara, Akwa-Ibom, Kogi, Enugu, Yobe, Taraba, Cross River, Ekiti, Ebonyi, and Bayelsa recorded comparatively lower numbers of NIN enrollments.
In terms of gender representation, the NIN database showcases 59.12 million (56.8%) males and 45.04 million (43.2%) females, highlighting a slightly higher representation of males in the database.
