NIMC Raises Alarm Over Fake NIN Portal Targeting Nigerians’ Data

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a warning to Nigerians over a deceptive social media post advertising a fake online portal allegedly offering free correction of National Identification Number (NIN) details.

In a public notice shared via its X handle on Tuesday, the commission said the circulating message, along with its embedded links, is part of a phishing operation designed to harvest personal and sensitive data from unsuspecting citizens.

NIMC urged the public to ignore the post completely and avoid interacting with any suspicious links claiming to provide free modification of NIN records.

It clarified that any updates or corrections to NIN information can only be done through its authorised self-service platform available on the official NIMC portal.

The commission also advised Nigerians to depend strictly on its verified communication channels for accurate updates regarding NIN enrolment, data corrections, and other identity management services.

According to NIMC, the circulating portal being shared online is not affiliated with the commission in any way and should be disregarded.

Reassuring citizens, the agency maintained that the national identity database remains secure and well protected against unauthorized access.

“We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected,” NIMC said.

It further called on Nigerians to stay alert and avoid engaging with dubious online links or messages impersonating the commission.

Reaffirming its commitment to data protection, NIMC said it remains dedicated to safeguarding citizens’ identity information and preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s identity management system.

The commission also encouraged the public to report any suspicious websites, messages, or activities falsely linked to it to the relevant authorities.
