Nigeria’s Foreign Exchange Inflows Climb to $109.9 Billion as Private Sector Leads Growth

Nigeria recorded a strong rise in foreign exchange inflows in 2025, with total receipts reaching $109.9 billion, driven largely by increased contributions from private and autonomous sources, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The News Chronicle reports that autonomous inflows accounted for more than 64 percent of total foreign exchange entering the economy during the year. These inflows climbed to $70.54 billion, supported by stronger non-oil exports, capital importation, and over-the-counter transactions, while inflows through the CBN declined slightly due to lower government debt receipts and foreign exchange swaps.

Despite higher outflows, which rose to $49.05 billion, Nigeria still posted a net foreign exchange inflow of $60.81 billion, exceeding the previous year’s performance. The CBN also noted that total foreign exchange utilization increased sharply, reflecting stronger demand for imports, particularly in the industrial, oil, and manufacturing sectors.

The latest figures highlight the growing role of private sector activity in supporting Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, reinforcing ongoing efforts to improve liquidity and reduce dependence on official sources.
