Nigeria’s energy inflation rate jumped to 4.69% in August 2026 from 4.40% in July, ending the decline that was recorded in the previous month.
The latest report by the Consumer Price Index from the National Bureau of Statistics revealed that energy inflation rose by 0.29 of a percentage point during the period.
The News Chronicle reports that the figure for August remains among the lowest this year, despite the recent jump. Energy inflation peaked at 12.90% in February and fell to 9.90% in March and 4.60% in April, before rising to 5.73% in May and 9.90% in June and then dropping to 4.40% in July.
The latest rise in energy inflation comes as headline inflation eases slightly to 15.39% in August from 15.43% in July.

Despite the moderation, energy costs continue to place pressure on households and businesses. Petrol prices have risen above N1,400 per litre in several locations, increasing the cost of running generators.
Meanwhile, Nigerians seeking alternatives through solar power face substantial installation expenses, with small systems reportedly costing between N800,000 and N2.5 million.
The latest figures highlight the continued influence of energy costs on household spending and business operating expenses.
