Food Inflation Remains High At 19.57% Despite Easing Pressure

Nigeria’s food inflation rate was 19.57% year-on-year (YoY) as of August 2026, down from a huge jump in the previous month.

The consumer price index (CPI) data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed that headline inflation dropped marginally to 15.39% from 15.43% in July.

The News Chronicle reports that while monthly food inflation declined to 1.02% in August from 5.56% in the same period last year, the average price of several commodities such as palm oil, pepper, onion, yam flour, beef, fresh fish, potatoes and poultry remained high.

Although the headline inflation rate grew at a slower pace, Nigerians are still spending more on food items compared to the previous year.

The core inflation rate also decreased to 13.29% YoY while its monthly rate was at negative 0.06%.

Food inflation was highest in Adamawa at 38.85% followed by Zamfara and Bayelsa with 37.96% and 36.20% respectively.

Agricultural imports also hit N1.2 trillion in the second quarter of 2026, rising 45.43% from the first quarter.
