Nigerian Immigration Service Enhances Border Security Amid Threats from Escaped Terrorists

The Niger State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has ramped up security measures and fortified patrols across border posts within the state.
This action follows a directive from the comptroller General of the NIS, Kemi Nana Nandap, instructing state and zonal commands to increase their patrol activities in border towns to prevent the influx of notorious terrorists who recently escaped from prison in the neighboring Republic of Niger.
According to a memo from the comptroller General, all Immigration formations in border communities across their respective states and zones have been ordered to stay vigilant and monitor for any unusual activity.
The head of the Media and Public Relations unit of the Niger State Command, Malam Mukhtar Abubakar, confirmed in a press statement that the command has already begun complying with this directive.
The statement, released to journalists on Thursday in Minna, emphasized the command’s proactive measures.
Abubakar explained that, in response to the memo, the command has deployed personnel on border patrol who are on high alert to enhance surveillance in border towns throughout the state. This initiative aims to monitor and check the movements of suspicious individuals.
He added that the service headquarters received credible intelligence indicating that some terrorists might attempt to infiltrate border communities following the jailbreak in Niger Republic.
Consequently, the command has been instructed to intensify patrols in border areas to prevent any potential security breaches.
“We are not taking any chances. We are already on top of the situation to curtail and checkmate the movement of any unusual activities in our border communities in the state. Our border patrol squads are diligently working to monitor and control the influx of suspicious individuals within our border towns and communities,” Abubakar stated.
Mukhtar also called on the general public to support the command by providing useful and credible information about any strange individuals in their areas.
He emphasized that such cooperation would significantly aid the command in taking timely and effective action.
He urged, “I’m calling on members of the public, particularly those within our border communities, to cooperate with our border patrol squads by sharing credible information about any unusual activity or individuals in their midst. This will enable us to take prompt and necessary action.”
