Team Nigeria strengthened its medal campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after weightlifters Onome Omolola Didih and Edidiong Joseph Umoafia delivered two impressive gold medal performances in Glasgow.
The News Chronicle reports that Didih took the women’s 53kg class by storm, registering a total of 206kg with a snatch of 93kg and 113kg clean and jerk. Didih’s performance was remarkable as she broke Commonwealth Games record for all the three categories. Gyaneshwari Yadav of India came a close second with Canada’s Rebeka Groulx claiming the bronze medal.
Earlier, Umoafia had also registered a memorable performance winning the gold medal in the 71kg weight category. He touched a stunning 319kg to register the new Commonwealth Games record. Umoafia bettered his own tally achieved during the qualification rounds to finish ahead of his compatriot John Lautafi Tafi of Samoa who took the second position with Ezekiel Moses of Nauru finishing third.
With the two gold medals, Nigeria’s tally of gold medals stands at five and the total number of medals is now at nine as the country continues to lead the medal chart in the host country.
Australia emerged the overall winner with a total of 16 gold medals followed by England as Nigeria also featured among the dominating teams in the competition in Glasgow.
