Nigeria, Egypt Partner to Modernise Transport Data Management

—

The Federal Government has strengthened its partnership with Egypt to accelerate the implementation of the Smart National Transport Databank Project, a key initiative aimed at modernising Nigeria’s transport management system through technology.

As part of the collaboration, a high-level Nigerian delegation, including the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Shehu Mohammed, accompanied the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Abbas Tajudeen, on an official visit to Cairo.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, the FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Osondu Ohaeri, said the visit was intended to resolve outstanding issues and advance the implementation phase of the project.

He described the engagement as another milestone in Nigeria’s drive to build a safer, smarter and digitally driven transport system.

According to Ohaeri, the visit followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 15 between the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) and Asia Arab Investment (AAI) in Abuja.

He said the agreement marked the transition from partnership to implementation and underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to deploying technology to improve transport management, road safety and national development.

The delegation also included the Director-General of NITT, Dr Bayero Salih Farah, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Mr Olufunso Olusesan Adebiyi, and other senior government officials.

Ohaeri said the Smart National Transport Databank Project would establish a comprehensive national transport database capable of generating reliable, real-time information for transport planning, infrastructure development, regulatory oversight, traffic operations, crash analysis and evidence-based policymaking.

He added that the project aligns with the FRSC’s strategic objective of leveraging technology and data to improve road safety and save lives.

A major highlight of the visit was the unveiling of proposed Driver Training and Development Centres to be established across Nigeria by ARCORP Egypt.

According to Ohaeri, the centres will operate under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) involving ARCORP Egypt, the FRSC and NITT.

He said the facilities are expected to improve driver education, promote professionalism, strengthen capacity development and contribute to reducing road traffic crashes nationwide.

Ohaeri noted that beyond formal agreements, the Cairo engagement reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to innovation, international collaboration and the deployment of cutting-edge technologies to modernise the transport sector.

He quoted the FRSC Corps Marshal as describing the Smart National Transport Databank Project as “a transformative national asset capable of redefining road safety management in Nigeria.”

Mohammed said access to integrated transport data would significantly enhance the FRSC’s operational effectiveness by improving crash prediction, traffic management, strategic deployment of personnel and resources, compliance monitoring and service delivery.

He added that the initiative represents the future of transport governance, where accurate data, innovation and institutional collaboration drive safer roads and more efficient transport systems.

Also speaking, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to providing the legislative support required for the successful implementation of the project.

He described the initiative as critical to Nigeria’s economic growth, digital transformation and transport infrastructure development.
