Nigeria agog as reactions trail emergence of Okonjo-Iweala as WTO DG

Reactions have begun pouring in over the emergence of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as new Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

Reacting, former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, congratulated Okonjo-Iweala for emerging as the new Director-General of the WTO.

The former Minister of Finance defeated her fellow finalistMs Yoo Myung-hee from South Korea by a wide margin for the keenly contested position.

Fani-Kayode who took to his Twitter account congratulated Okonjo-Iweala for being the first African to head WTO.

He wrote, “Congratulations to our very own @NOIweala who has just been elected as the first African to ever head the World Trade Organisation. Great news for Nigeria!”

On his part, Dele Momodu wrote: “Wow! Excellent choice. Congratulations to her and to Nigeria and our great people!” — Dele Momodu Ovation (@DeleMomodu).

On his part, Omokri said nobody else could have deserved the appointment better than Okonjo-Iweala.

Omokri tweeted yesterday: “Today is one of my happiest days. My dear friend, @NOIweala, made it. The first woman and African to head the @WTO as DG.

“To God, be the glory. Nobody could have deserved this better. Absolutely no one. Congratulations to you, Dr Ikemba, your children, and to Nigeria and Africa!”

Commenting on the victories of Okonjo-Iweala and Akinwumi Adesina, Dennis Adesanya wrote on Twitter, “The United States was against both of them but they emerged victorious: >Oknonjo-Iweala – WTO DG. >Akinwumi Adesina – President AfDB. Naija to the World. Power of Naija.”

“Okonjo-Iweala confirmed as WTO DG. Congratulations. We are super excited,” Oluwatosin Olaseinde wrote.

Iweala emerged winner of the highly competitive race after polling 104 votes from 164 member countries to defeat her opponent, South Korea’s trade minister, Yoo Myung-hee.

With the development, Iweala has become the first female and first African to occupy the office.

Recall that she had received support from 79 countries.

Speaking during a virtual press conference last Friday, she said the 55-man African Union (AU) officially endorsed her over her only opponent, Yoo Myung-hee of South Korea.
