To prevent any troubles during the New Year celebrations in Plateau State, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Jos Joint Traditional Council, has decided to cancel the annual New Year cultural festival that usually takes place at the beginning of each year in the state.
This decision comes in light of recent unfortunate incidents, including killings in Bokkos, Mangu, and Barkin Ladi LGAs.
Additionally, Alhaji Muhammed Sambo Haruna, the Emir of Wase and President of the Wase Traditional Council, has made an announcement regarding the postponement of the annual Fulani cultural festival, Nyalde Fulaku, originally scheduled for January 6, 2024.
The decision to postpone this event, which also aimed to raise funds amounting to N5 million for furnishing and equipping the emirate’s information and communication centre, is a gesture of respect and sympathy following the tragic loss of more than 195 lives in Barkin, Bokkos, and Mangu LGAs.
Da Jacob Gyang Buba conveyed this directive through a statement signed by his Special Assistant, Da Yakubu Mamman Dang, emphasizing the need to prioritize the current circumstances and the safety of the community.
Similarly, Alhaji Muhammed conveyed the news of the Fulani cultural festival’s postponement through a statement signed by the Secretary of the Wase Emirate Council, Alhaji Ibrahim Jalo, highlighting the significance of respecting and mourning the lives lost in the mentioned local government areas.
The decisions to suspend the New Year festivals signify a shared recognition of the difficult and delicate atmosphere in the region.
