Video streaming app, Netflix is considering ways to make money from its gaming service.Â
Netflix has been offering free mobile games to its subscribers for two years, creating over 75 games based on popular shows like Grand Theft Auto, Love Is Blind, Monument Valley, and Oxenfree.
The new gaming services could include in-app purchases, premium title pricing, and potentially placing ads on games for subscribers in the ad-supported tier.
Despite initial reluctance towards ads and in-game payments, Netflix has emphasized its focus on creating a gaming experience solely driven by player enjoyment, without heavy monetization concerns.
Plans may change, as Netflix has previously reversed decisions, such as initially opposing an ad-supported tier and cracking down on password sharing.
This interest in monetizing games aligns with Netflix’s need for growth following stagnation in early 2023, marked by employee layoffs and price increases.
Netflix has made significant investments in gaming, acquiring studios, posting job listings for AAA games, and potentially allocating budgets exceeding $200 million. Analysts estimate Netflix’s total gaming investment at around $1 billion.
