NDLEA Warns Parents as Drug Traffickers Hide Cannabis in Sweets and Biscuits

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has warned parents to closely monitor their children’s interest in biscuits and soft candies, following the discovery of cannabis concealed in some confectionery products imported into Nigeria.
NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, issued the warning on Sunday, August 9, saying recent operations by the agency had uncovered attempts by drug traffickers to conceal illicit substances in ordinary food and household products.
According to Babafemi, parents should pay closer attention if they notice children or teenagers developing an unusual interest in biscuits and soft candies, as some of the products could contain substances beyond what consumers expect.
The warning followed the seizure of two 40-foot containers in Lagos, in which large quantities of cannabis were allegedly concealed among legitimate imported goods.
The seized consignments reportedly included vehicles, generators, batteries, textiles and confectionery products.
The NDLEA said thousands of packs of soft candies containing cannabis were discovered, alongside different types of biscuits allegedly infused with the illicit drug.
The agency urged parents and members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious products or activities to the appropriate authorities as efforts continue to disrupt the trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs in Nigeria.
