Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano have intercepted a large consignment of cannabis and taken a suspect into custody in a pre-Eid crackdown.
The Kano Strategic Command confirmed the development in a statement released on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari.
According to the State Commander, Mr Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, the suspect, Sani Musa, 34, a native of Bebeji Local Government Area, was apprehended on March 10 during an intelligence-driven operation.
He revealed that officers recovered 510 compressed blocks of cannabis sativa from the suspect during the raid.
Yahaya-Lawal further disclosed that the suspect admitted the drugs were handed over to him by a notorious dealer known as “Alaramma” for storage in his residence.
“The suspect admitted that he was authorised to sell the illicit drugs to customers and that the stock was meant for distribution during the Sallah period when demand and profits are usually high,” he said.
The commander noted that efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing accomplice, “Alaramma, who is currently at large.”
He reassured residents of intensified enforcement operations across the state, especially during festive seasons when drug trafficking activities typically spike.
Yahaya-Lawal called on the public to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious movements to the nearest NDLEA office.
He also cautioned individuals involved in drug-related offences to abandon such activities and pursue legitimate means of livelihood, while encouraging safe and healthy celebrations during the festive period.
On behalf of the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, retired Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba-Marwa, the commander extended Eid-el-Fitr greetings to the people of Kano.
He wished residents a peaceful and secure celebration, free from drug abuse, and reiterated the agency’s resolve to work closely with communities to combat drug trafficking and abuse in the state.
