Navy Destroys 5 Illegal Refineries in Delta, Seizes 13,050 Litres of Crude

—

The Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos of the Nigerian Navy has dismantled five illegal crude oil refining sites in Obodo Omadino Community, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, intensifying efforts to curb oil theft and protect national assets.

FOB Escravos Commanding Officer, Navy Capt. Ikenna Okoloagu disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, in Warri.

He said the coordinated operations, conducted between November 5 and November 19, followed credible intelligence that guided naval personnel to multiple illicit refining camps hidden within the riverine community.

According to Okoloagu, the team seized a total of 13,050 litres of stolen crude oil stored in 30 dugout pits and three polythene sacks. He explained that the raids formed part of Operation DELTA SANITY II, a sustained offensive against oil thieves and economic saboteurs across the Niger Delta.

Breaking down the operations, the naval chief noted that two illegal refining sites were destroyed on November 5, leading to the recovery of about 4,000 litres of stolen crude. Another site was dismantled on November 14 with 3,850 litres seized, while two additional sites were deactivated on November 19, yielding about 5,200 litres of stolen crude oil.

Okoloagu emphasized that the crackdown aligns with the strategic directives of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, who has mandated continuous pressure on criminal networks undermining the oil and gas sector.

He issued a stern warning to individuals and groups involved in crude oil theft and illegal refining, urging them to desist or face the full weight of the law. He also reiterated the Navy’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime environment and protecting critical national infrastructure.

The operation marks another significant step in the ongoing battle against illegal oil activities, which continue to pose environmental and economic threats in the Niger Delta region.
