Nasarawa State Government Intercepts Rice Theft on State-Owned Farms

A law enforcement operation led by the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Mohammed Iyimoga, has foiled an attempt to steal over 32 bags of rice from government-owned farms.

The suspects were apprehended while trying to transport the stolen rice to Plateau State.

Speaking about the incident on Thursday, Hon. Iyimoga disclosed that some criminals had hired unsuspecting farmers to harvest rice from government farms under the guise of legitimate employment.

“We caught some of these criminals in the act, while others managed to escape,” Iyimoga said. “They confessed that they were hired by a group of Tiv farmers who falsely claimed ownership of the land and promised to pay them for their work. Unfortunately, the hired farmers were unaware they were harvesting rice from government property.”

The commissioner, who personally oversaw the operation, confirmed that the suspects are in custody and cooperating with security agencies. “We are committed to uncovering the masterminds behind this criminal act and ensuring they face justice,” he said.

Hon. Iyimoga also urged residents of the area to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security personnel. “I appeal to the community to stay alert and report any unusual movements around the farm to the nearest security outpost. Together, we can protect our resources and prevent future theft,” he added.

He reiterated the state government’s dedication to safeguarding public assets, particularly those critical to food security.

“The government has made significant investments in agriculture to ensure food security for everyone. Any attempt to sabotage these efforts will be met with the full weight of the law,” he warned.

The suspects are currently being interrogated as authorities work to identify and apprehend those behind the operation.
