The member representing Akwanga, Nassarawa-Eggon, and Wamba federal constituency in Nasarawa State, Jeremiah Umaru has decried the rising level of insecurity in the area while also calling for decisive measures from the stakeholders and residents to address the ugly trend.
Speaking during a peace and security summit he organized in order to find a lasting solution to the security situation in the area, the member of the All Progressives Congress explained that the summit was also geared towards complementing the efforts of the Federal, State, and Local Governments to ensure that the people live in peace and harmony despite their diverse interests and beliefs.
The federal lawmaker who stated this in the Akwanga Local Government of the state also emphasized the need for peace, maintaining that security is not just the responsibility of the government and the security agencies alone, but a collective responsibility, hence the need for the initiative to bring my constituents together.
“The summit is part of my contributions to create a platform where people of diverse culture, religion as well as political interest in the area can come together to discuss as brothers and sisters irrespective of their differences.
“As their representative at the National Assembly, I promise to continue to initiate programmes and sponsor quality bills and motions that would help to address the challenges confronting them.” He added.
On the recent issues of flooding in some parts of the state, Jeremiah Umaru called on his constituents to always report early signs capable of causing flooding and other emergencies to the appropriate authorities for prompt action to prevent disasters.
Also speaking, the North-Central Director of the National Emergency Management Agency, Bashir Idris-Garna who was a resource person at the event, urged residents to adopt non-violent approach towards addressing conflict.
He explained that communication plays an important role in enhancing peace and unity, adding that the absence of it brings suspicions, thereby serves as a security threat.
He therefore, called on residents of the area to embrace unite and respect the beliefs and interests of one another as a prerequisite for ensuring peaceful coexistence in the society.
On his part, the Chun Mada and Chairman, Traditional Council of Akwanga LG, Samson Gamu-Yare, lauded the lawmaker for the initiative to ensure peace and unity through robust engagement with the critical stakeholders.
The royal father further assured that the traditional rulers would continue to play their roles in ensuring that the state remained peaceful.
Meanwhile, the meeting had in attendance, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Yakubu Kwanta, representatives of the Aren Eggon and Sarkin Wamba, Districts Heads, Village Heads, Ward Heads, Student groups, Market women, and traders, among many other stakeholders.
