MURIC Demands Arrest of Christian Preacher for Wearing Hijab in Lagos

A Christian street preacher donning a hijab while evangelizing across Lagos has drawn sharp condemnation from the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), which has called for her immediate arrest and prosecution.

In a statement released Wednesday, July 9, 2025, MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, described the woman’s actions as “provocative, nauseating, and capable of inciting religious unrest.”

“We have three separate videos showing her wearing the Muslim hijab while preaching Christianity in public spaces, including inside a commercial bus,” Akintola said. “In one clip, she’s seen standing by the roadside, urging passersby to accept Jesus. In another, she boards a bus and removes the hijab after preaching.”

MURIC alleged the woman is deliberately impersonating a Muslim to deceive and convert adherents, labeling her conduct a threat to public peace and religious harmony. “She is a confusionist, an agent provocateur. Her actions could spark a religious crisis,” Akintola warned.

The group urged security agencies, including the Lagos Police Command and DSS, to “hunt her down” and bring her to justice. “She must be stopped before her actions escalate into violence,” the statement read.

MURIC also called on the Christian Association of Nigeria (Lagos Chapter) to rein in “religious overzealousness” among its followers, criticizing what it described as daily disruptions from loud early-morning preaching and unsolicited sermons inside commercial buses.

“We appeal to Muslims who encounter her to remain calm and report to authorities. No one should take the law into their own hands,” Akintola added, invoking a hadith that encourages patience in the face of provocation.

The group further called on the Lagos State Government to enforce existing laws banning preaching in public transport and ensure environmental sanity is maintained.
