The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has called on opposition politicians to refrain from actions capable of inciting Nigerians against the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement issued on Friday in Kaduna by his Personal Assistant on Media, Ahmad Dan-Wudil, Matawalle said political disagreements should not be pursued in ways that undermine the country’s unity, democratic institutions or international image.
The minister described as unfortunate reports alleging that a politician had engaged a foreign lobbying firm to circulate decades-old documents relating to President Tinubu in the United States.
According to him, such actions neither strengthen Nigeria’s democracy nor address the nation’s pressing socio-economic and security challenges.
Matawalle urged opposition leaders to support the Federal Government’s efforts to tackle insecurity, strengthen national unity and improve the welfare of Nigerians instead of seeking to discredit the Presidency.
He described the Presidency as a national institution and a symbol of Nigeria’s sovereignty that deserves respect regardless of political differences.
“No foreign government or lobbying firm can determine Nigeria’s democratic choices or overturn the mandate freely given by Nigerians,” he said.
The minister stressed that political competition should not come at the expense of the country’s image, unity and collective interest.
He noted that United States President Donald Trump had recently commended President Tinubu’s leadership and acknowledged Nigeria’s progress in strengthening security cooperation and combating terrorism.
According to Matawalle, the recognition reflects growing international confidence in Nigeria’s efforts and should encourage citizens to promote national unity rather than project divisive narratives abroad.

He said campaigns built on propaganda and hatred would neither derail the Tinubu administration nor diminish its achievements but would instead undermine the credibility of those behind them.
Matawalle maintained that misinformation and political mischief would not weaken the administration, insisting that Nigerians freely elected President Tinubu to lead the country.
He called on opposition politicians to embrace constructive engagement by presenting credible alternatives and supporting efforts to combat insecurity, promote peaceful coexistence and accelerate national development.
The minister also urged political actors to avoid actions capable of overheating the polity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, all political stakeholders have a responsibility to safeguard Nigeria’s unity, stability and international reputation.
