Meta Moves To Block News From Australia Over Licensing Fee

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is contemplating blocking news content from its platform in Australia as a response to potential government requirements for licensing fees linked to news content.

The company’s regional policy director, Mia Garlick, emphasized that Meta is considering all options, including the possibility of blocking news to avoid paying these fees.

The Australian government is revisiting a 2021 law that empowers it to mandate tech giants like Meta to compensate media outlets for linking to their news content.

Initially, Meta had entered into agreements with Australian media firms following the law’s introduction.

However, the company has signaled its intention not to renew these agreements beyond 2024.

In light of this decision, Australian broadcasters such as Nine Entertainment and Seven West Media are facing financial strain, leading to job cuts as they prepare for the expiration of their agreements with Meta.

Meta has defended its stance by suggesting that blocking news content in Australia would still align with legal obligations.

The company is facing ongoing challenges related to content moderation and the prevention of scams, followed by a lawsuit filed by Australian billionaire Andrew Forrest over cryptocurrency scam advertisements.

While Meta asserted that it has systems in place to mitigate misleading advertisements, it acknowledged the complexity of completely eliminating such issues.
