Martinez Apologizes For Offensive Behavior, Accepts FIFA Sanction

Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, has apologized for his actions that led to a two-match ban by FIFA for “offensive behavior.”

“I accept the FIFA sanction and apologize if I offended anyone,” Martinez stated. “The moment of celebration is meant to bring smiles to many boys and not disrespect anyone.”

Martinez’s apology comes after FIFA punished him for breaching their code of conduct in two separate incidents. The 32-year-old Aston Villa player was found guilty of “violating principles of fair play” and “offensive behavior.”

The incidents in question involved Martinez holding a replica of the Copa America trophy to his groin after Argentina’s World Cup qualifier victory over Chile on September 5, and striking a TV cameraman’s camera with his gloves after their 2-1 loss to Colombia on September 10.

Martinez acknowledged that his actions may have caused offense, despite his intention being to celebrate. “It was never my intention to disrespect anyone, nor did I understand that a gesture well received by the people could be offensive, but I will try not to offend anyone anymore and just focus on winning titles with Argentina and Aston Villa.”

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) expressed disappointment with FIFA’s decision, stating their “absolute disagreement” with the disciplinary committee’s ruling.

As a result of the ban, Martinez will miss Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela on October 10 and Bolivia on October 15.

“I will support my friends during this FIFA date with the pain of not being able to be there,” Martinez said.
