A Magistrate Court in Kano State has ordered the remand of one Ali Suleiman over the alleged killing of his wife, Maryam Nababa Badamasi, barely two months after their marriage.
According to reports obtained by The News Chronicle on Saturday night, the suspect was arraigned before the court on charges related to culpable homicide. Prosecutors alleged that Suleiman killed his wife in a bid to gain access to her wealth and inheritance.
The prosecution further told the court that the deceased, Maryam Nababa Badamasi, came from a wealthy family and had inherited property from her late former husband.
Government counsel, Aisha Habibu Hassan, described the offence as a serious crime punishable by death if proven. She urged the court to grant more time to obtain legal advice and complete investigations into the matter.
Presiding Magistrate Sadiya Zakirai granted the request and ordered that the suspect remain in custody pending further investigation and legal guidance on the case.
Family sources also alleged that the suspect may have targeted the deceased over her inheritance, though authorities are yet to officially confirm the motive behind the alleged killing.
