Man sentenced to jail for N12 million inheritance scam in Maiduguri

The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has convicted and sentenced Isiyaku Ibrahim to one year imprisonment. This verdict came before Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri.
The legal proceedings against Isiyaku Ibrahim commenced on July 3, 2023, when he was formally charged with criminal misappropriation amounting to N12,000,000.00, allegedly for personal use, to the detriment of the deceased’s family members.
The charge reads: “That you Isiyaku Ibrahim and Mallam Ibrahim sometime between 2014 to 2019 at Jajere Baga Road, Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, being entrusted with dominion over certain properties belonging to Muhammad Isiyaku (now deceased) to wit: (1) Three Houses, (2) Two fenced lands one of which had seven shops, (3) two bread factories, (4) one open land, (5) two truck tankers and (6) one big installed generator, valued at N12,000,000.00 (Twelve Million Naira) only and thereby criminally misappropriated the said amount to your personal use, to the detriment of the family members of the deceased and therefore committed an offence contrary to section 308 of the Penal Code Cap 102 Laws of Borno State and Punishable under section 309 of the same law.” the same law.”
During the trial, the defendant pleaded “not guilty,” prompting the prosecution counsel, Faruqu Muhammad, to present six witnesses and numerous documents as exhibits before the court.
After due deliberation, Justice Fadawu rendered a verdict of guilt against Isiyaku Ibrahim and sentenced him to one year in prison. However, the court provided an alternative option of a N100,000 fine.
Isiyaku Ibrahim’s imprisonment stemmed from his arrest by EFCC operatives for allegedly misappropriating properties entrusted to his care, which included three houses, two fenced lands (one with seven shops), two bread factories, one open land, two truck tankers, and one large installed generator, collectively valued at N12,000,000.00.
This legal outcome serves as a testament to the commitment of the EFCC in ensuring justice and accountability in cases of financial malpractice and misappropriation.
It underscores the consequences individuals face when found guilty of such offenses, while also highlighting the importance of upholding trust and responsibility in handling assets entrusted to one’s care.
