A senior officer of the Nigerian Army, Major General Hassan Ahmed, has been killed by armed men in the Abaji area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred while the officer and his wife were travelling from Okene in Kogi State to Abuja.
According to sources, the attackers ambushed the vehicle conveying the couple and opened fire, killing the senior officer on the spot. The driver of the vehicle reportedly survived the attack after pretending to be dead.
The gunmen were said to have abducted the officer’s wife and fled the scene immediately after the assault.
Major General Ahmed was said to have served as a director at Army Headquarters following his appointment by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya.
He also previously held the position of Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army.
The incident has heightened concerns over rising cases of armed attacks and kidnappings along major routes in parts of the country, particularly within and around the FCT.
Security authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the attack as of the time of filing this report.
