The Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) has commenced discussions with Julius Berger Nigeria Plc on improving coordination between water and road infrastructure projects across Lagos.
The corporation disclosed this in a statement following a courtesy and familiarisation visit by its Managing Director, Mr Mukhtaar Tijani, to Julius Berger’s Ijora office.
LWC said the engagement was aimed at strengthening relations between both organizations and creating opportunities for closer collaboration on infrastructure development.
The discussions focused on road construction, protection of water pipelines, water infrastructure development and sustainable water supply across Lagos Island and its environs.
Both organizations stressed the need for early communication and technical coordination to prevent road construction projects from damaging existing water infrastructure.
Julius Berger’s Regional Commercial Manager, Region West, Mr Alexander Bauer, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainable engineering solutions, rather than short-term interventions.
Bauer emphasized the importance of involving relevant stakeholders early and ensuring proper technical coordination before construction work begins.
The meeting also considered access to project drawings and technical information needed to improve coordination between road and water infrastructure projects.
Julius Berger, however, explained that the release of detailed project drawings was subject to approval by the relevant client.
The organizations consequently agreed to engage the Lagos State Government to obtain the necessary approvals and strengthen technical cooperation.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of accurate pipeline information in planning future water infrastructure and urban development projects.
The LWC delegation raised concerns over uncoordinated borehole drilling and its potential impact on groundwater resources and the environment.
Participants noted that strengthening public water supply systems could reduce reliance on individual boreholes and help protect underground water resources.
They also agreed on the need for regular information sharing on construction activities, road conditions, project schedules and possible disruptions.

Security and community-related issues were also discussed, with Julius Berger highlighting its engagement with relevant authorities on security infrastructure in the area.
The meeting ended with a commitment by both organizations to maintain open communication, strengthen technical coordination and explore further areas of collaboration.
The partnership is expected to improve the integration of water and road infrastructure planning and support more resilient and sustainable infrastructure development across Lagos.
