Let’s End This Cycle of Killings — Peter Obi Demands Urgent Action on Insecurity

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on governments at all levels to take urgent and decisive measures to end the persistent killings and insecurity across Nigeria.

Obi made the call while reacting to the reported killing of 32 Nigerians in Ungushi, Sokoto State, and recent attacks in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, where more people were reportedly killed and several others injured.

Describing the incidents as deeply painful, Obi said the victims should not be viewed merely as statistics, noting that they were parents, children, farmers and breadwinners whose deaths had devastated families and communities.

“These are not just numbers. They are parents, children, farmers, and breadwinners whose lives have been cut short, leaving families devastated and communities in fear,” Obi said.

He warned against allowing the country to remain trapped in what he described as a recurring cycle of killings, condolences, promises and inaction.

“We cannot continue with a cycle of killings, condolences, promises, and inaction,” he said.

Obi urged governments at all levels to prioritise the protection of lives and property, calling for better intelligence gathering, proactive security measures, swift responses to attacks, protection of vulnerable communities and diligent prosecution of perpetrators.

He stressed that Nigerians should be able to live without constant fear, particularly when travelling, farming or staying in their homes.

“Nigerians should be able to sleep peacefully in their homes, travel safely on our roads, and go to their farms without fear,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor also called on the government to demonstrate greater commitment to its constitutional responsibility of protecting citizens and their property.

Obi expressed condolences to the families and communities affected by the attacks, praying for comfort for the bereaved and forgiveness for the departed.

“May God comfort the bereaved, may Almighty Allah forgive the departed, and may our nation find lasting peace,” he said.
