Katsina Launches $1 Million Project to Protect Food Security from Floods and Drought

In a major push to bolster agricultural resilience against climate change, the Katsina State government has launched a $1 million initiative titled the Protecting Food Security Against Recurring Floods and Drought project.
The announcement was made by state leadership, highlighting that food security is fundamental to sustainable economic growth, improved livelihoods, and the overall development of the society. Because agriculture remains a primary source of livelihood for Katsina State, safeguarding farmers, farmlands, water resources, and food systems has been designated a top priority.
The project is implemented by Mercy Corps Nigeria in partnership with the Katsina State Development Management Board and the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning. In its initial phase, the intervention will roll out across three Local Government Areas, specifically Bindawa, Bakori, and Kafur.
The project is designed to tackle the growing impacts of climate shocks by focusing heavily on vulnerable farming communities, paying special attention to vulnerable households, women, youths, and smallholder farmers.

Core components of the initiative include land restoration, improved water and drainage management, rehabilitation of solar-powered water systems, enhanced food storage and the reduction of post-harvest losses, as well as climate-smart agriculture and livelihood diversification.
Government institutions have been directed to ensure rigorous coordination and monitoring of the project, alongside exploring opportunities to scale up similar climate-resilience initiatives statewide.
The ultimate vision is to cultivate a resilient Katsina capable of withstanding climate shocks, boosting agricultural productivity, and guaranteeing broader access to food and economic opportunities for its residents.
State leadership commended Mercy Corps Nigeria, the Katsina State Development Management Board, development partners, and stakeholders for their collaborative efforts toward this timely intervention.
