Kano State Govt Approves N1bn For State Universities’ Allowances

The Kano State Government has given the green light to disburse over N1 billion to Yusuf Maitama Sule University (YUMSUK) and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH) Wudil.

This allocation is intended for various purposes, including settling Earned Academic and Excess Workload Allowances, among other commitments.

Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata, the Commissioner for Higher Education, shared this information during the 3rd joint meeting involving heads of tertiary institutions, the scholarship board, and top management of the ministry. The meeting took place at the Kano State Polytechnic.

For YUMSUK, the governor has approved N279 million to address Earned Academic Allowances and an additional N66 million for the convocation ceremony.

ADUSTECH, Wudil, on the other hand, received allocations exceeding N629 million for excess workload payment and N38 million for non-academic staff allowances.

In November 2023, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at YUMSUK had raised concerns with the state government. These concerns included the immediate settlement of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) balances, Consequential Adjustment arrears, and the adoption of the newly approved Consolidated Universities Academic Salary Structure II award by the Federal Government.

Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata’s spokesperson, Sunusi A. Kofar Na’isa, quoted him as mentioning that the Kano State government has disbursed 40% of the payment to the contractor responsible for rebuilding the burnt theatre hall at Aminu Kano College of Legal and Islamic Studies (AKCILS). The project is set to commence shortly.

The commissioner emphasized the commitment to timely fund disbursement and expressed satisfaction with the conduct of all tertiary institutions in the state.

In response, Dr. Abubakar Umar Faruk, representing the heads of state-owned tertiary institutions and the Rector of Kano State Polytechnic, commended the ministry for initiating the monthly meeting.

He recognized it as a significant step in understanding the institutions’ situations and strengthening the cordial relationship.

During the meeting, each head of the tertiary institution presented reports outlining achievements, challenges, and future plans for advancement.
