The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulating Nigerians at home and in the diaspora on the occasion.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
In his goodwill message, Tunji-Ojo praised Nigerians for their warmth, hospitality and resilience, noting that the country’s rich human and natural resources remained important national assets.

The minister stressed that peace and political stability were essential to achieving sustainable socioeconomic growth and national development.
He urged Nigerians across the country to reflect on the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers and uphold the spirit of patriotism in building a better future for generations to come.
“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country. Our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” Tunji-Ojo said.
