JUST IN: Ex-Finance Minister Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji is Dead

Former Minister of Finance and Sardaunan Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, is dead.

His family confirmed his death on Thursday in Abuja.

Alhaji served as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance from 1990 to 1991 under the military administration of former President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.

Before his appointment as Finance Minister, he served as Minister of State for Budget and Planning in 1988. He also held the positions of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Renowned for his distinguished public service, Alhaji built a career that spanned several decades in the civil service and corporate sector, occupying numerous strategic positions in government.

Beyond public office, he was the Sardaunan Sokoto, one of the highest traditional titles in the Sokoto Caliphate.

He was turbaned as Sardaunan Sokoto in 1990, succeeding the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello. In that capacity, he served as a respected link between government, the traditional institution and the people.

Further details surrounding his death and burial arrangements were yet to be announced by the family as of the time of filing this report.
