Nigerians have fired back at President Bola Tinubu following his order for an immediate reduction in food prices, insisting that fuel costs must drop before any real relief can be felt.
Reacting on The News Chronicle’s Facebook page, Harrison Okolie quipped: “Crash fuel price and every other thing will crash.” Another user, Maitama Sule, suggested that the move was politically motivated, saying: “Is it because you want to be re-elected? God pass you.”
The reactions trailed Wednesday’s announcement by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Sabi Abdullahi, at a capacity-building workshop for Senate correspondents in Abuja.
Abdullahi explained that Tinubu’s directive aims to guarantee food sovereignty by ensuring the safe and unhindered movement of farm produce nationwide.
According to him, a federal executive council committee has been set up to promote secure passage of agricultural commodities along key routes, tackling transportation costs which remain a major driver of food inflation.
Abdullahi added that the president’s agenda goes beyond temporary price cuts, focusing instead on a broader plan to secure Nigeria’s food sovereignty through availability, accessibility, affordability, and nutritional adequacy on a sustainable basis.
