Inter Miami CF Names Javier Mascherano as Head Coach

Inter Miami CF has officially announced the appointment of former Argentina and FC Barcelona legend Javier Mascherano as its new head coach.

Mascherano signed a contract that will keep him with the Major League Soccer (MLS) club until 2027. He will assume his coaching responsibilities upon receiving the necessary work documentation.

“This role demands someone with the expertise to maximize our unique mix of talent—ranging from global superstars to Homegrown players and promising young internationals. Javier’s extensive experience, both as a player on the world’s biggest stages and as a coach at the youth international level, perfectly fits our vision. He has even worked directly with players like Tomás Avilés, Facundo Farías, Federico Redondo, and Benjamin Cremaschi,” said Managing Owner Jorge Mas. “We believe Javier is a crucial addition as we aim to set a new standard for soccer in North America and continue our pursuit of becoming one of the world’s elite clubs.”

President of Football Operations Raúl Sanllehí added, “We’re thrilled to welcome Javier and his family to Inter Miami as we build on our ambitious vision. His leadership will be key in advancing our project.”

Mascherano expressed his enthusiasm about the role, stating, “Leading a club like Inter Miami is both an honor and a privilege, and I’m eager to make the most of this opportunity. The organization’s ambition and the infrastructure it has in place drew me to this project. I look forward to helping the club achieve new milestones and creating unforgettable moments for the fans.”

Mascherano transitioned to coaching in December 2021, becoming manager of the Argentina U-20 national team after a decorated playing career. Under his leadership, Argentina participated in several major international tournaments, including the 2024 Olympic Games, the U-20 FIFA World Cup 2023, and the 2023 U-20 South American Championship.

Mascherano achieved remarkable success as a player with clubs like Liverpool FC in the English Premier League and FC Barcelona in Spain’s La Liga.

At Barcelona, he made over 350 appearances and secured multiple titles, including two UEFA Champions League trophies, five La Liga championships, five Copa del Rey titles, and two FIFA Club World Cups. He was also named Barcelona’s Player of the 2013-14 Season and included in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season in 2014-15.

Mascherano’s blend of elite playing experience and coaching acumen makes him a key figure in Inter Miami’s quest to elevate its status in global soccer.
