Insecurity: Attack on Kogi Bus Leaves One Dead, Several Injured

A terrorist attack on a commercial bus along the Ayere–Kabba road in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State has left one person dead and several others injured.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Sunday when gunmen opened fire on travelers along the busy route.

According to witnesses, some vehicles managed to escape, but several passengers were hit by bullets. One victim was confirmed dead at the local hospital, while others are receiving treatment for gunshot injuries.

Residents say the Ayere–Kabba area has become increasingly dangerous, with frequent attacks by armed gangs believed to operate between Kogi and neighboring Kwara State.

In recent months, communities along the Kogi–Kwara border have experienced a rise in terrorist attacks, kidnappings, and violent crimes, raising serious concerns about security in the region.

On Sunday, residents of Yagba East Local Government Area protested in front of the General Hospital in Isanlu against the rising wave of kidnappings and bandit attacks.

The protest followed the killing of an elderly, sick woman who had been abducted by bandits the previous day. Eyewitnesses said demonstrators blocked major roads, set tires on fire, and demanded urgent government intervention.

The elderly woman was reportedly kidnapped during an attack in Ilafin-Isanlu on Saturday. Bandits allegedly killed her after realizing she could not keep up with them through the forest. The attack has left the community in shock and mourning.

Yagba East and West Local Government Areas have seen daily incidents of kidnappings and armed robberies in recent months.

Communities bordering Kwara State are particularly vulnerable, as bandits exploit the porous borders to carry out attacks and evade security forces.
