The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the killing of the former Chief Security Officer of Khana Local Government Area, Letam Kine, by unidentified gunmen.
Kine was reportedly shot dead around 6 p.m. on Sunday along Polytechnic Road in Bori, the headquarters of Khana Local Government Area.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, ASP Grace Iringe-Koko Agabe, said the attackers fled the scene before security operatives arrived.
She disclosed that the victim’s remains had been deposited in a mortuary, where they would be preserved pending an autopsy.
According to her, the police have commenced a full-scale investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and bring those responsible to justice.
“The Rivers State Police Command has launched a full investigation to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice,” she said.
Agabe urged the deceased’s family to formally report the incident to the police to aid ongoing investigations and facilitate the administration of justice.
“Reporting the matter to the police will aid ongoing investigations and facilitate the prompt administration of justice,” she added.
She reaffirmed the command’s commitment to identifying, arresting and prosecuting all those linked to the killing.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Chief Thomas Bariere, condemned the attack, describing it as a senseless act of violence.

Bariere said Kine’s murder was heartbreaking and had no place in a peaceful and law-abiding society.
He also expressed concern that the incident occurred only weeks after the killing of Clement Deegbara of Kpong Community.
According to him, the repeated attacks point to the activities of armed criminal gangs determined to destabilise peace and security in Khana Local Government Area.

The council chairman called on security agencies to intensify operations across the area and ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those behind the attacks.
He extended his condolences to Kine’s family, praying for the strength to bear the loss.
Bariere also urged residents to remain calm, stay vigilant and continue providing security agencies with timely and credible information to help tackle criminal activities.
He reiterated that protecting the lives and property of residents remains a top priority of his administration.
