I Gave Nigeria My Best As ‘President’ — IBB

Former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, shared in an exclusive interview with FUT Minna Search FM Radio that he considers his greatest achievements as Nigeria’s leader to be gaining a deeper understanding of the country and building friendships across various sectors.

He revealed that his leadership approach involved a combination of coercion and persuasion.

He encouraged them to study the country, its diverse population, and learn about its complexities, believing that this knowledge would be valuable for future leadership roles.

Reflecting on his tenure, he stated, “I served the country to the best of my ability, even if it might not satisfy everyone.

I leave it to history to judge.” He highlighted his positive relationships with the people and his extensive travels, which allowed him to make friends nationwide, considering this as one of his significant achievements.

When asked to rank his achievements, he asserted, “Number one is that I served the country the best I could.” Babangida acknowledged the multifaceted nature of leadership, noting that understanding human beings, being compassionate, and sometimes employing ruthlessness were essential aspects of effective leadership.

He stressed the need for leaders to provide solutions to problems and instill confidence in the people.

Discussing his leadership style, he explained, “You are placed in a leadership position, and your job is to lead people.”

Babangida emphasized the importance of studying human behavior, reading about people, and being adaptable in different situations.

He acknowledged that leadership involves a combination of approaches, including persuasion and coercion, depending on the circumstances.

Touching upon his experience during the civil war, Babangida expressed sadness and a strong desire to avoid a repeat of such a conflict.

He specifically mentioned the sorrow of fighting individuals he had trained with for the unity of the country.

General Ibrahim Babangida’s interview provided insights into his leadership philosophy, the importance of understanding the nation, and the complexities of managing diverse relationships during his time as Nigeria’s military president.
