Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, a Chieftain of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has expressed appreciation towards the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for maintaining its stance in the Supreme Court regarding the appeal filed by Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf. The appeal contested the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
In a statement provided to Newsmen in Ibadan, the NNPP emphasized INEC’s defense of its conduct during the Kano State governorship election.
According to the party, INEC asserted that the 165,616 disputed ballot papers were genuine and originated from the commission itself.
Addressing the issue of Yusuf’s membership in the NNPP, the statement highlighted INEC’s position that a person’s membership in any political party is an internal matter for the party and should not be subject to court determination.
Speaking on behalf of the NNPP, Ambassador Ajadi, who was the party’s gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State in the last election, commended INEC for upholding the truth.
He stated that INEC’s affirmation of Abba Yusuf as the duly elected governor of Kano State at the Supreme Court strengthens the credibility of election processes in the country.
Ajadi expressed confidence in the independence of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s leadership at INEC, applauding the commission for its transparency and unbiased approach.
He further asserted that INEC’s support aligns with the NNPP’s claim of winning elections, including the Kano governorship, in a fair manner.
According to Ajadi, the NNPP’s prominence in Kano, as evident in the number of State Assembly and National Assembly members, is a testament to the party’s success.
Ambassador Ajadi commended INEC for standing firm in support of the truth and expressed optimism that the electoral landscape in Nigeria can be secure if the commission continues to uphold its principled position despite external pressures and challenges.
