Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, is facing three counts tied to possession of a gun while using narcotics. The trial marks the first time a child of a sitting US president has faced a criminal trial

Two counts allege that he falsely indicated on a form that he was not using illegal drugs when purchasing a Colt Cobra revolver in 2018, while the third count alleges possession of a firearm while using a narcotic. The indictment states that Biden certified falsely on a federally mandated form regarding his drug use.

President Biden, in a statement as jury selection began, expressed a dual role, saying, “I am the president, but I am also a dad.” He emphasized his support for his son, recognizing the gravity of the charges, and expressing love and confidence in Hunter.

Kate Andersen Brower, an author with expertise in US presidential families, commented on the situation, stating,  the unprecedented nature of a president’s child facing a criminal trial “is definitely not a good look” and may cause potential emotional strain on President Biden.

Witnesses expected to testify include Biden’s ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, and Hallie Olivere Biden, the widow of his late brother, Beau, who discarded the handgun in question.

Prosecutors plan to introduce evidence, including text messages, indicating Biden’s drug use around the time of the gun purchase. Among these messages is one where he allegedly mentioned waiting for a dealer and another where he claimed to have said he was smoking crack.

Hunter Biden’s legal team aims to call the owner of the gun shop and two to three expert witnesses.

The trial’s media attention and potential impact on the political landscape are significant, particularly given that Hunter Biden also faces federal tax charges, with a trial scheduled for September.

However, the White House has stated that pardoning Hunter Biden is not under consideration, despite the option being within the president’s power.
