The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has promised to restore petroleum subsidy if elected president in the 2027 general elections, saying his administration would first wage a war against corruption.
Obi made the pledge on Monday at a town hall meeting in Sokoto State organised for the joint Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former Anambra State governor identified systemic corruption as the country’s biggest economic challenge, promising to dismantle corrupt practices across government if elected.
“People are talking about subsidy but what it is all about is corruption. By removing the corruption, I assure you that we will bring back subsidy,” Obi said.
“The problem of Nigeria is corruption. As such, if elected, we will stop all forms of corruption in every sector of the country.”

Obi urged Nigerians to support NDC candidates across all elective positions in 2027, describing national transformation as a collective responsibility.
He also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a governance model centred on “care and service to Nigerians,” while expressing concern over the economic hardship confronting citizens.
According to him, his administration would redirect public resources towards national security, education and infrastructure.
“Education is our number one priority after unity and security,” he added.
Obi further pledged to link all state capitals across the country through an integrated railway network, saying the project would boost trade, connectivity and regional economic integration.
