The Federal Ministry of Education has approved the final ranking of textbooks to be used for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS1) from 2026 to 2028.
The ministry announced the release of the approved list in a statement issued on Monday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo.
According to the ministry, the publication followed the completion of the first phase of the national textbook ranking exercise.
It said every textbook on the approved list had been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code, alongside details such as the title, author, publisher and year of publication.
The ministry said the tracking system was designed to make it easier for schools, publishers, education authorities and procurement agencies to identify and monitor approved instructional materials.
The exercise was conducted under the supervision of the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, with Alausa giving final approval to the list.
The ministry explained that the new tracking mechanism was aimed at improving transparency and accountability in the selection, procurement and use of textbooks in Nigerian schools.
It noted that the process of generating and assigning unique codes to each ranked textbook contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final list.
The ministry also disclosed that the national textbook ranking exercise would be conducted in phases, with the second phase covering textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS2 and SS2.
It added that the same identification and tracking measures would be applied to textbooks approved under subsequent phases.

The Federal Ministry of Education directed publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other stakeholders to consult the approved list when selecting or purchasing textbooks for the classes covered by the first phase.
The ministry said the exercise was part of the Federal Government’s broader effort to ensure that learners and teachers had access to quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned instructional materials.
It further urged all stakeholders to comply with the approved list when providing and using textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, JSS1 and SS1.
The complete 2026–2028 approved textbook list, including the Ranking/QR Tracking Code assigned to each textbook, has been made available through the ministry’s designated platform.
