Housemaid charged by police for allegedly stealing N130,000 from employer

In a court in Jimeta, Yola, a 25-year-old domestic worker named Naomi Tunba appeared before a judge.

The reason? She was accused of stealing N130,000 from her employer. The police said Tunba, who worked for Asma’u Hamza in Karewa for more than three years, was charged with theft. However, Tunba pleaded not guilty.

The police told the court that Asma’u Hamza reported the incident at Karewa Police Station on January 28th around 11:30 in the morning.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Esther Emmanuel, claimed that Tunba, having built a trusted relationship with her employer and the family, allegedly took Hamza’s handbag and stole her Zenith Bank ATM card on January 25th.

According to the prosecution, two days later, Hamza received a notification on her phone indicating a withdrawal of N130,000 from her account.

Despite efforts to find Tunba, she remained elusive until the police eventually arrested her.

During police investigations, Tunba denied the accusations, stating that withdrawals were made by various Point of Sale (POS) operators.

The prosecution argued that Tunba’s actions violated section 287 of the penal code law of Adamawa State 2018.

Despite the accusations against her, the Area Court Judge, Al’amin Diya, made a decision to release Tunba on bail.

She was asked to provide N100,000 for her bail, and she also needed someone to vouch for her with the same amount of money.

The court postponed the case until February 19th for more discussions and actions to take place.
