HOPE-EDU Workshop Opens in Lagos, Targets Improved Foundational Learning Nationwide

The HOPE-EDU Result Area 1 Thematic Workshop has opened in Lagos, bringing together federal and state education officials from the North Central and South West regions to strengthen foundational learning outcomes for Nigerian children.

The four-day workshop, which focuses on the Structured Pedagogy Package (SPP), aims to translate investments in education into practical improvements in teaching and learning across the country.

Declaring the workshop open, the Director for North Central, Elder Edward Abalaka, who represented the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Aisha Garba, said the gathering was more than a technical engagement, stressing the need for participants to turn education investments into measurable classroom outcomes.

“This is not just another technical meeting; this is the moment we translate big investments into practical, life-changing improvements inside our classrooms,” Abalaka said.

The workshop also attracted the physical participation of the World Bank, represented by Elice Elegbe, underscoring the importance attached to the programme and its objectives.

In her opening remarks, the Programme Manager of HOPE-EDU, Dr Aisha Abdul, welcomed participants and described education as “the bridge between potential and prosperity.”

Dr Abdul noted that the workshop was the culmination of months of preparation that began in February, urging participants to move from planning to implementation and ensure that the programme delivers tangible results.

She said the Structured Pedagogy Package was designed to be outcome-driven, with an emphasis on quality teaching, effective instructional materials, and proper evaluation, rather than focusing solely on educational inputs.

According to her, the workshop provides an opportunity for education officials to examine existing challenges, confront difficult questions, and develop practical measures to achieve the program’s targets.

Participants from the Academic Services, Teacher Professional Development, and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) units are expected to use the four-day session to deepen their understanding of the tools, systems, and implementation plans required for the rollout of the Structured Pedagogy Package.

The programme is also expected to strengthen support for teachers and improve learning outcomes for pupils by ensuring that teachers have access to appropriate instructional resources, training and monitoring systems.

A key focus of the workshop is the approaching November 15 deadline for the Disbursement Linked Indicator (DLI), with participating teams expected to intensify efforts towards meeting the required milestones.

The Lagos workshop represents the first phase of a wider engagement designed to extend the HOPE-EDU educational improvement programme across Nigeria.

Following the Lagos session, similar engagements are expected to take place in Uyo and Kano, with the programme ultimately reaching stakeholders across all six geopolitical zones.

The organisers expressed confidence that the engagements would strengthen coordination between federal and state education authorities and contribute to sustainable improvements in foundational learning nationwide.
