Gunmen kill 10 IDPs in Benue

Gunmen reportedly attacked a camp for displaced people in Guma Local Government Area, Benue State, resulting in the tragic death of 10 individuals.

The disclosure was made by the Camp Commandant, Felix Aponi Banke, during a fact-finding visit led by the Acting Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sir James Iorpuu, along with International Humanitarian Organizations.

According to Banke, nine lives were lost in Camp 2, and the tenth victim, from Gbajigmba Camp 1, had not yet been buried.

The camp management, represented by Banke, expressed its commitment to coordinating with the district head and community leaders to secure land for the burial of the deceased.

One of the prominent challenges highlighted by Banke was the prevalence of diarrhoea among the camp residents due to the lack of access to clean water.

The dire situation underscores the urgent need for adequate sanitation and infrastructure to ensure the well-being of the displaced population.

Additionally, the displaced individuals shared their distressing experiences, revealing their difficulty in finding rest at night due to the constant fear of potential attacks.

This sheds light on the severe psychological impact that conflicts and insecurity can have on the affected population, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support and solutions.

In addressing the broader context, SEMA boss Iorpuu explained that the government, led by Governor Hyacinth Alia, is actively collaborating with the Federal Government and the international community.

Their joint efforts aim to facilitate the safe and prompt return of internally displaced persons to their original homes, emphasizing a commitment to restoring stability and normalcy to the affected communities.
