Following a humiliating loss to Paris Saint-Germain in Le Classique, a result that essentially finished his time with the team, Olympique Marseille has confirmed the departure of head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
Scoring five unanswered goals at the Parc des Princes, PSG ran riot and revealed Marseille’s difficulties in recent weeks in a one-sided match. Following the game, De Zerbi apologised to the fans and acknowledged the team had fallen short, noting the current run has been tough despite prior strong performances.
Marseille’s early Champions League exit had already increased pressure on the Italian coach; this loss further intensified it. Although he oversaw a few more fixtures, internal debates within the club leadership led to a mutual decision to part ways.
Marseille stated in an official statement that the decision was made after careful consideration by the club’s leaders in response to athletic challenges. The club expressed gratitude to De Zerbi for his professionalism and emphasized the team’s second-place finish last season as a significant accomplishment under his direction.
De Zerbi’s departure could unsettle key players, including Mason Greenwood, who had thrived under his leadership and considered him a central figure in Greenwood’s comeback.
While reports in England indicate De Zerbi is still much valued by a number of Premier League teams, Marseille is expected to appoint an interim coach before their next league game.
