Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has been honoured with the prestigious Nurse-Friendly Governor Award at the 2026 Commonwealth Nurses and Midwives Conference held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The conference, themed “Towards Excellence: Nurses and Midwives working together towards excellence in practice, education and regulation,” drew participants from across Commonwealth countries.

Presenting the award, Kathleen McCourt, President of the Commonwealth Nurses and Midwives Federation, praised Zulum for his humanitarian efforts, particularly his housing initiatives for internally displaced persons and investments in healthcare infrastructure. She said his leadership has set a standard across the Commonwealth.

The governor was represented by Abubakar Kullima, alongside his aide Abdurrahman Ahmed Bundi.

Earlier, Haruna Mamman, President of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, said recipients were selected based on strict criteria approved by the association.

Other governors from states including Nasarawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Bayelsa, Adamawa, Lagos, Katsina, Plateau, Anambra, and Akwa Ibom were also recognised.

Zulum’s achievements include the establishment of Colleges of Nursing across Borno and the execution of hundreds of development projects, with over 1,500 completed in his seventh year in office, according to organisers.
