Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has decided to give one billion naira for training teachers who work at the basic level.
This training will happen in all 27 areas of the state where local governments are. He said this on Tuesday when he was welcoming the new education secretaries for the local governments. 
The governor also mentioned that there are about 1,000 teachers who only finished secondary school (O-Level) and need more training to be better teachers. They will get this training so that they can become better at teaching.
He also said that some teachers who don’t have formal teaching qualifications can still learn to be good teachers through training.
Governor Zulum said that when he started being governor in 2019, one of the important things he did was to fix many schools that were damaged. He said because of this, fewer children are now out of school.
Before, there were more than two million children not going to school, but now it’s only about eight hundred thousand.
He told the new education secretaries that they have an important job and they should do it well. He also warned that if they don’t do their job properly, they will be replaced.
“I must emphasise that with great privilege comes great responsibility. Therefore, I have directed the Honorable Commissioner for Education to furnish me with quarterly reports on the performance of each education secretary. Those failing to meet expectations will be replaced,” Zulum said.
Apart from that, Governor Zulum also gave out 58 vehicles to the education secretaries. Each of them received one Toyota Hilux double-cabin 4-wheel-drive pickup truck and one Volkswagen Golf 3 wagons.
He said these vehicles are for official use only and should be driven by authorized people.
The Education Commissioner, Engr Lawan Abba Wakilbe, said that they received about 126 applications for the job of education secretary, and they chose the best people for the job through a selection process.
