With just six weeks to go until the #OndoDecides2024 elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched a scathing attack on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government, led by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. The PDP in a statement on its Facebook page, alleged that despite having an average of N12 billion monthly, Governor Lucky’s administration has failed to deliver on basic infrastructure, including road construction, during his nine-month tenure.
According to the opposition Party, the state capital, Akure, has become the dirtiest in southwest Nigeria under Governor Lucky’s watch, and nepotism has become rampant.
The PDP claimed that the APC government has conducted recruitment scams, taking money from unsuspecting citizens without providing jobs. The party questioned what happened to the funds collected from these fake recruitment drives.
The statement added that policy inconsistencies and unnecessary appointments have also characterized Governor Lucky’s administration, despite widespread calls for cost-cutting measures. The PDP asserted that Lucky’s statement, “a year is not enough to be Governor,” was actually a hint at his intention to “loot the state dry.”
This criticism comes amidst rising tensions between the PDP and APC in Ondo State. Recently, violence broke out between supporters of the two parties, and there are concerns about potential election violence. Additionally, some PDP leaders have defected to the APC, potentially impacting the election outcome.
As the elections draw near, the PDP’s allegations against Governor Lucky’s administration are likely to intensify the debate about the state’s future.
Recall that Lucky Aiyedatiwa took office on December 27, 2023, following the death of Rotimi Akeredolu, the previous governor. Aiyedatiwa was chosen by Akeredolu as his running mate for the 2020 Ondo State Governorship election.
