Governor Aiyedatiwa Signs New Power Law to Transform Ondo’s Electricity Sector

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has assented to the State Electric Power Sector (Amendment) Law, 2026, aimed at strengthening the legal and institutional framework for electricity generation, transmission and distribution in the state.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday in Akure by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the law, passed by the Ondo State House of Assembly, amends the 2020 Power Sector Law to align it with the Electricity Act, 2023.

A major provision of the amended law is the establishment of the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC), an independent body responsible for regulating tariffs, licensing, mini-grids, third-party investments and renewable energy development.

The law also establishes the State Independent System Operator (SISO), State Market Operator (SMO), and Equipment Standards and Competence Certification Agency (ESCCA) to inspect electricity installations and accredit operators.

Under the new framework, compulsory metering is mandated for both grid-connected and off-grid areas, while community- and privately funded electricity infrastructure will receive legal protection.

The law also creates the offence of Electricity Infrastructure Expansion Sabotage, with a N2 million fine upon first conviction for deliberate refusal to connect to the grid, as well as an additional daily fine of N25,000 for continued non-compliance.

It further empowers the Ondo State Power Company, the commercial arm of the state’s electricity sector, to drive investments in renewable energy, independent distribution networks and small hydro projects.

According to the statement, the new framework is expected to promote private-sector participation, protect investments, expand electricity infrastructure and take advantage of the decentralisation of Nigeria’s power sector.

Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to using reliable electricity as a catalyst for industrialisation and economic development in the state.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Johnson Alabi, described the governor’s assent as a major milestone towards building an investment-driven power sector in Ondo State.
