The Nigerian government has announced that security agencies are working closely with major social media companies to identify and shut down accounts used by terrorists and criminal groups to promote their activities and raise funds.
The Director-General of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Major General Adamu Laka, disclosed this at an end-of-year briefing held in Abuja.
He said terrorist groups are increasingly using platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and X to showcase attacks, display stolen items, and communicate with supporters.
According to him, Nigerian security agencies have held several meetings with these technology companies to address harmful content and remove accounts that pose a threat to national security.
General Laka noted that terrorists are constantly changing their tactics, including the use of fake names and unverified accounts.
However, he stressed that security agencies are also adapting their strategies to counter emerging security threats and ensure the safety of the country.
